A new pharmaceutical company, Viatris, has agreed to pay more than $1.5 million to settle lawsuits over a product called “Viagra.” The drugmaker is using the settlement to make it the first of its own generic drugs to be approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
In a settlement filed today, Viatris is also agreeing to pay the remaining $15 million in interest to the company in connection with the settlement, which has been filed with the F. D. A. in a January 2017 letter to the agency.
“We believe the settlement represents a milestone in Viatris’ efforts to build a more effective and affordable health care system for patients and their families,” said FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg.
“This settlement resolves allegations that Viatris and other healthcare providers have failed to adequately warn patients about the drug’s potential impact on cardiovascular health,” said FDA Director in Charge Dr. Richard W. Gillette.
